Pregnancy passes so quickly. One day you’re sharing the news, and before you know it, you’re holding your little one. A maternity session is a chance to pause in the middle of it all and hold on to how this time felt.

I once photographed a client who very nearly didn’t do her shoot. She used to model, and with the pregnancy she simply didn’t feel like herself anymore. She and her husband had come down from upcountry for a holiday on the coast and decided they might as well book a session while they were here, but she was anxious the whole way. In the days before, she messaged me with question after question, and I did my best to put her at ease.

On the day, she relaxed and had a wonderful time. Then her photographs arrived, and she was completely blown away. She couldn’t believe that the woman in those images was her. She told me how grateful she was that she hadn’t cancelled.

If you’re feeling unsure about a maternity shoot, you’re not alone. Almost everyone I photograph feels a little nervous beforehand. My job is to make you feel comfortable, so you can simply enjoy it.

When is the best time?

Between 28 and 32 weeks is ideal. Your bump is beautifully round, and you’ll still feel comfortable moving, standing and changing outfits. I have photographed clients up to 35 weeks, but it isn’t ideal.

I’d suggest booking during your second trimester, so we have time to plan and secure the date you want.

Where can we do it?

Almost anywhere that feels like you. Over the years I’ve photographed maternity sessions in nature reserves and forests, standing in rivers, on a swing hung from a tree, on the beach at sunrise, and in the studio.

  • Outdoors, we work in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon. Natural settings bring texture, movement and a relaxed, organic feel.
  • In the studio, at Studio 039 in Sea Park, the light is controlled and calm, with no wind or weather to worry about. It’s perfect for elegant, timeless portraits, and wonderfully private.

If you have a place that means something to you, tell me about it. We’ll work out the best time of day for the light together.

What should I wear?

There’s no single maternity look. Some love a big, bold gown with a long train that flows in the wind or across the water. Others prefer a sleek, fitted dress that shows off every curve of the bump. Both are beautiful. It comes down to how you want to feel.

  • Flowing gowns are dramatic and romantic, especially outdoors. You can hire maternity gowns in Durban and on the South Coast.
  • Fitted dresses are elegant and modern, and work beautifully in the studio.
  • Colours: soft pastels and gentle, muted tones photograph best. Avoid bright neon, red and busy prints, which draw attention away from you.
  • For your partner: plain, soft colours that complement your outfit.

Once you’ve booked, I’ll send you suggestions to help you choose.

Including your partner and children

Your partner is very welcome, and some of the most tender images come from the quiet moments between you: a glance, a laugh, a hand on the bump. If you have older children, include them too. Watching a big brother or sister with the bump is something you’ll treasure.

What is a styled session?

A styled session is planned around a look you love, often with flowers, fabrics and décor, and sometimes a special location. We’ll talk through ideas together beforehand, so it feels completely yours.

On the day

You don’t need to know how to pose. I’ll guide you gently through every pose, at your pace, with plenty of breaks. Bring water, a snack and comfortable shoes for between shots.

After your session

Every image is hand-selected and individually edited, and your full gallery is ready within 2 to 4 weeks. I always try to have your photographs with you before your baby arrives.

And I’d always recommend printing your favourites. An album or a canvas is something you’ll one day share with your child.
